S E M I ⧭ S O L I D (oobleck) – 5 New Artists you should listen to right now to cope with COVID

S E M I ⧭ S O L I D (oobleck) is a playlist made solely of new artists and their best and most current work. They’re still proving themselves in this media circus we call the music business, but you I’ve confidently added them to my playlist. You can, too.

AKA  “new artists it’s OK to start following because they’re just fresh enough that your friends don’t know about them so you can selfishly hoard them as long as possible, but they have enough music and followers that they’ll probably be making music for a long time.”

Genres: Neo-Soul, Trap R&B, Funk, Indie, Afrobeat, and more

Serena Isioma

Serena Isioma, Sensitive LP

What I know so far: Serena is a 19-year-old Nigerian American artist from Chicago. Confident in lyrics and interviews,  her subject matter is refreshing. I am 35 and can relate, somewhat. There is a bit of seriousness in her approach to talking about herself. I.e. this quote: “Just know my life has not and will never be normal.”(from interview from NefariousSupply.com)

Genres: (somewhat self-described) Alternative Rb and hip hop with lofi and guitar unk influences

Vibes (listen to this when you’re): Riding,  vibing, smoking, fucking, pondering what seems to be lesbian relationships

Signature/Current projects: Sensitive LP

Standout songs: Hard, Valentina, Sensitive, Cookout

My hopeful collabs: Steve Lacey

Nnamdi

Nnamdi's New Album, BRAT.

Nnamdi’s New Album, BRAT.

What I know so far: He’s Nigerian, he’s based out of Chicago, just like our other little spring flower who I’m so in love with, Serena Isioma. He plays a ton of instruments and is getting lots of press and has been for a while. NPR in 2018 and other well-respected media have picked him up. And damn did they get some great photos.

Genres: I can’t tell, it’s beyond me. I hear versions of soul, funk, rock, and electronic trap/hip hop.

Vibes (listen to this when you’re): Working, reading, studying, in the mood for some really good autotune, something moody, angsty, and very introspective. He’ll get you there.

Signature project/songs: BRAT, his latest album

Standout songs: Flowers To My Demons, Everyone I Loved, Wasted, Glass Casket

My hopeful collabs: Childish Gambino, Thundercat, Kid Cudi

Brandy Haze

What I know so far: She is a strong woman who is fearless in her determination to succeed in music. She’s from LA, and has lived in Atlanta and had a career in New York, one that helped her in her current dream to pursue music, a marketing analyst.

“If I had to start over, I wouldn’t do anything different. Everything you go through teaches you a lesson and creates our journey in life.” (From an interview with VoyageLA)

Genre: Definitely Trap R&B. She’s mentioned that she plays with different genres, but I definitely feel her sound is crystal clear and fits into what’s hot on the radio right now, or the top songs. Think: Summer Walker’s first works and how refreshing, yet spot-on and ready for mainstream they were.

Vibes (listen to this when you’re): Seducing, breaking up with, or getting back with an ex

Signature projects: Roses

Standout songs: Bloom, Late Night, CONDITIONAL

My hopeful collabs: Xavier Omar

Marcus Charles

What I know so far: He’s ranked #3 on Reverb Nation, and is from Suffren, NY. He put an album called 25% percent which was created around the ever evasive quarter-life crisis that I suspect many Zoomers already can relate to. I didn’t feel it was his best work. He has definitely changed his entire style, and I’m digging the evolution of this young, awake artist. Earmilk covered him 2 years ago, so he’s been on the music blogs’ radars for a while.

Genre: Jazz, Neo Soul, Hip hop, R&B, the new kind though

Vibes (listen to this when you’re): Pensive, thoughtful, reflective, striving, and determined to find a way out of your current situation

Signature/current project: 25%

Standout songs: (Not on 25%) Baptism, Small Town Blues, idgaf, Breathe

My hopeful collabs: Smino, Saba, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000

Toyé

What I know so far: He’s going to be big in Afrobeat. Maybe not as big as Wizkid, or even Rema. But he’s going to have his spot. This Nigerian artist who claims Atlanta on his Soundcloud profile seems to already be working with heavyweights, as he was supposed to open for Burna Boy on April 19th. Not sure how that’s playing out, still, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll be in regular rotation.

Genre: Afrobeat/Dancehall – SOLID.

Vibes (listen to this when you’re): Doing a sexy workout, popping booty while you’re doing makeup, getting ready for a night out, on actually riding out to enjoy the night out, (or that secret party in the woods, you know, when life is right again)

Signature projects: His song ATTITUDE from a year ago has the most spins on his Soundcloud.

Standout songs: Ansa Me, Adenike, Pe Mi (Sisqo Thong Song Cover)

My hopeful collabs: Burna Boy, Ms. Banks
